Fans want £ 10million man sold to West Brom or Nottingham Forest

Of all the weird decisions Newcastle United have made in recent years, giving Dwight Gayle a new three-year deal last summer seems like one of the strangest.

After all, it’s not as the veteran poacher has been a key part of Newcastle’s plans for some time now.

He only started four Premier League games in the last season. And, having been on the pitch for a total of 21 minutes this quarter, it seems unlikely that Gayle will even come close to matching his 2020/21 tally, unless Callum Wilson’s injury curse strikes again.

At 32, one has the feeling that Gayle is wasting his career on the bench at St James’ Park.

He also hasn’t kicked a ball in anger since Eddie Howe took over from Steve Bruce. This is despite the fact that Howe suggested that Gayle may have a part to play in Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw against relegation rivals Norwich City.

So the January transfer window seems like the perfect time for the two sides to shake hands and go their separate ways.

Especially since Newcastle’s new Saudi owners are expected to open the door for players much more prominent than former Peterborough United.

According to The telegraph, championship duo Nottingham Forest and West Brom are both interested.

And while the Forest ties will raise a few eyebrows – manager Steve Cooper and CEO Dane Murray would rather work with promising young players than with seasoned veterans like Gayle – West Brom’s interest won’t come as a surprise at all.

The Baggies have failed to score in each of their last three league games, increasing pressure on manager Valérien Ismael.

And if Gayle could emulate the form of his previous Hawthorns spell – he scored 23 league goals for West Brom in 2018/19 – his arrival would give Albion’s promotion prospects a huge boost.
